Build Your Own Website

Drop and drag, no HTML necessary
  1. Go to Homestead.com

  2. Click on the JOIN button, or if already joined, log in user name and password. The user name that you pick will become your URL directory name, so choose something mnemonic. For example, if your member name is JohnDoe, then your URL will be: homestead.com/johndoe/index.html

  3. To start, go to “my web pages”.

  4. Click “new web page”.

  5. At this point it pops up a description window, which will go away in a couple of minutes because it is downloading the work area.
  6. It will pop up a thumbnail of “index”, which is always the name of the first page.

  7. Click OK on the thumbnail.

  8. It pops up a workpage.

  9. Click on the buttons below the workspace regarding what you like, (such as text or image) and then you can type and insert right into the work area.

  10. The boxes for text or images can be sized and moved. You can cut and paste text from the windows clipboard (i.e., such as a Word Document).

  11. When you save and preview, the URL at the top of the screen is the URL of your website.

  12. To create a link: You can create a link to text or an image. Highlight the exact part that you want to be clickable, and then the LINK button will become active. Click on LINK. You can either select another URL, (that you must already know), or another of your own webpages. The webpage must already be created. So, first create the webpages, then make the links. .

  13. To paste an image or animation onto your site that you found on the internet: When you find an image that you like on someone else’s page, right click on it, and save it to a location on your hard drive. I recommend creating a special directory for your images. If you like, you can rename it when you save it. You can also keep them on a disk. Then, from your homestead site, double click on “image”, click on “import new file”, then click on “browse”. You can browse either your C or A drive. Select the image file, name the image in the ID box, then click okay. The image will appear on your workspace, ready to be moved or sized.

  14. To put a photo on your site, scan the photo and save it to disk or hard drive. Then follow all the instructions in the previous paragraph.

If anything is unclear about this, please let me know so I can improve it. Thank you.
